STRESS.COM

I have spent today running a workshop for the hair and make-up artists for the Graduate Fashion Show. I have made step by step guides for the MUAs as well as face charts to help them with the looks. What I did today was demonstrate the looks and then allowed them to do it and then correcting any mistakes, told them their strong points and where they need to improve. There wasn't any passion within the group though. I don't think theyre taking this as seriously as they need to. Obviously it is really important to me as the designer because I need to make a great impression for Illamasqua. i can't help but feel overwhelmed from the stress of it all though. I am trying my hardest to deliver and it seems nothing I do is good enough in the eyes of my lecturers. I am so jealous that all my course mates have finished uni and I still have this project lingering about. We only managed to do two of the looks today. They were the most technical looks and I'm thinking it may have been a mistake to do these first as the students struggled with the looks and I think they may be afeeling a bit scared now. The looks I am going to do tomorrow are much easier. This is the make-up that I did today...

I just hope the standard improves tomorrow. I think I need to be a lot harsher. I am a bit nice. Just a few more days and it will all be over. I don't want my stress to effect the students. I need to stay positive in order to keep a happy ambiance. It is meant to be fun as well. Whos wants to do a fashion show that is 9 hours of complete hell. I am doing this for me. No one else.

End of an era.

I should have gone out celebrating last night like everyone else did but I just can't!

I feel so exhausted and stressed about the fashion show. I just have a feeling something is going to go horribly wrong and its going to be a disaster and that Alex Box is going to hate everything.

Don't get the wrong impression I am excited as well!

Take a look at my wesbite www.jomoses.co.uk

I like it but I don't think it really suits my style. I would like something more edgy and goth like, I think its too pretty for me ha.

I have failed to get the Illamasqua Australia job due to my lack of sales experience. It's understandable that they need an amazing team of artists who are great at sales for the launch. I have however, been offered a second interview to work for Illamasqua in the UK which is awesome.

Exciting times!

I met Spob from Illamasqua yesterday! She was really nice. She has said exactly what I wanted and needed to hear.. The make-up needs to be bigger, bloder and stronger. I know the designers are worried about it overtaking their clothes but here are some examples of strong make-up at catwalk shows and how it just enhances the collections.

Tribal Beauty at Rodarte

Alexander McQueen always had strong make-up with his collections

Gareth Pugh of course always has amazing make-up basically because it's designed by my absolute fave Alex Box

And finally I loved the make-up from the Dior Couture ss07 collection.

I really need to up my game, this is too much of a good opportunity to produce average make-up designs.

Also the best MUA herself is going to be there but can't really say who!

Here are some examples...

Tribal

Blue Sparkly Eyes

Experimentation is the key.

So I thought I would document my experimentation for the make-up for the graduate fashion show. In this film I say I'm going to go through three looks but I dropped my camera after the second look and it broke! So this film only shows two looks. I'll try do more soon. I love film as much as an idiot I make myself look!

New Pics

Haven't posted any photos in a while...

Yesterday I worked with one of my absolute favourite photographers-Emily Anderson- on a fashion story based on the colour orange. The location was Orange Rooms in Southampton which is known for it's 70s feel and warm orange tone walls and furnishings. Emily is such a lucky girl to be in contact with the fabulous fashion photographer Wayne Johns who has shot for Vogue, Rimmel and L'Oreal. He came along to the shoot yesterday to help Emily out. I think he has real belief in her talent and has taken her under his wing. I met him at a previous shoot but I was stupidly to shy to ask out right if he knew any make-up artists that I could assist or shadow so yesterday was another great opportunity for me to network and try and make some industry contacts. He is such a nice guy, really open and friendly. We chatted a bit and I asked if he could put me in contact with any make-up artists and he said "Yes of course!" so we swapped details etc and I'll drop him an email within the next few days

Here are a couple of shots from the shoot. More to come....

I should start wearing my glasses

The amount of time I spend staring at my computer screen must cause some damage!

So what I have been up to is finalising all my work, thinking about how I'm going to present it and lay it out.

Ive also been really thinking about what I am going to do when i finish uni. This is a decision that is literally tearing my heart apart. Why is it that I meet the man of my dreams only a few months before I am due to leave Southampton for good. I know I sound like a complete soppy idiot but anyone that knows me will know what a true romantic I am and how much I lust for the perfect man and perfect relationship. It appears that I am willing to let this jeopardize my career, would I sacrifice my life long ambition of moving to London and becoming a successful make-up artist.. Well yes, unfortunately I probably would. Ha ha I can't believe I am actually typing this bull!!!

I have talent, a talent not to be wasted in John lewis working in crappy sales. So this is what has been tormenting me the past few weeks.

On another note, I am working my way through the fashion monitor contact book. It would be so amazing to get with a great agency. I am offering to assist or shadow for a lo/no fe at the moment. Who doesn't want work for free? i have contacted 12 agencies so far, I usually give them a call first and then they ask for an email.. but then at least you can say in the email that you have spoken to them.

I also have a new job. It's working for Fake Bake as a sales demonstrator, I have to move between John Lewis and Debenhams in Southampton.. I know that this is the last thing I want to be doing but it's money at the end of day.

The past couple of weeks and me starting to believe that this industry is actually TOO DAMN DIFFICULT to succeed in has also lead me to think about perusing a career as a pole dancer. I have been having lessons for 12 weeks now and I'm not too bad, surely someone would pay to see me dance.. haha.

I saw my parents yesterday for the first time since xmas, theyre worried about me.. "Where do you see yourself in 5/10 years time" "why did you come to uni" "where has your ambition gone?!" They have kindly said though that if I get some kind of amazing work experience with the BBC they would pay for my travel, as this was my worry, how am I meant to travel to London every day for two weeks when I'm not being paid or earning any money.. So now I'm off to write some letters.

Safe.

I never know how to title my posts so I thought a simple 'safe' would be sufficient as that sums up how I'm feeling right now. Fairly pleased with myself and content.

The Lime Crime/Emma Bell shoot went well, I am glad I went with that as I think it will look super in my portfolio :D

Heres a sneeky peek.

There was another model as well but I didn't take any pics on my cam as I was in a huge rush to catch my coach back and I ended up misisng it anyway! Like literally ran from Victoria train stsation to the coach station and as I got there the coach was pulling away! haha.

Sooo what else has been going on.. well, I have been thinking that I need to do something else for my FMP. I still wanted to curate a little exhibition or maybe organise a networking event for photographers/muas/stylists/designers. Whilst I was getting in a stress thinking my life was over and I was never going to graduate I received a lovely email from the co-ordinator of the Graduate Fashion Show- Alex Rigby- asking if I wanted to be the MAKE-UP DESIGNER for the show! I have participated in the graduate show for the past two years and to be designing the make-up is such a fantastic opportunity. I am so excited! There is going to be 25 models and I get to design 5 different hair and make-up looks. There is so much to consider- location, clothing, lighting, time, demonstations etc!!

Here are a few pics from the previous shows I have worked on.

I'll be getting some practice in this Sunday as well as I am working on a fashion show in London called The Future of Fashion

Peace Out!

I wish I could be in four places at once...

A few weeks ago I had so much going on. I was going to London loads working on various projects and now everything has gone a bit dry! I am aware this happens in the industry and you just have to keep being persistant to get more work. Over the last couple of weeks though I have really been thinking about my life after uni. I've been thinking about getting a full time/part time job whilst I still try and work freelance... Possible jobs I could do/want to do

-Double Take Studios (location Southampton)
I have sent a CV to DT, I imagine that a lot of the girls will be leaving after completing uni and since I love Southampton so much why not stay here for a little longer and work here.

-John Lewis/Debenhams
I wouldn't really mind working on a make-up counter. It could end up quite tedious I suppose though and it is 90% sales . I am meant to have a job interview with FAKE BAKE to be a demonstrator in John Lewis. It's quite good money but obviously nothing to do with make-up. One problem though the job interview is Tuesday and I have lots of other things going on then. Which I will get to in a minute as it's a bloody nightmare!!

-Smashbox Cosmetics
Smashbox are coming to Debenhams (unfortunately not Soton yet) and I have applied for a role as a make-up artist with them. Note the role is 'make-up artist' and not retail advisor or something like that. Closing date isn't til the end of April though so I have ages yet til possibly even hearing a reply. With this job being in Basingstoke as well it would be possible to travel from Southampton or if I was to move to Basingstoke it is even closer to London which is a plus!

-Whilst having a little browse on Gumtree jobs I came across two absolute gems! The first being a position at SCREENFACE Notting Hill! I applied immediately thinking I would never hear back off of them and I did. They asked if I would be relocating to London and I said I had plans in process. The second job was to work at a fancy spa in central london doing make-up for brides and special occasions but they also asked if I was relocating. This job is only two days a week- fri and sat- and it wouldn't be a problem for me to travl to London on a Friday, stay at a friends Friday night, work Saturday and come back to Soton, it's pretty much what I do every week anyway! Theyve asked to see some images of my work and that was last night so I'm still hoping to hear from them soon as it's a great opportunity.

-My final idea/plan/last resort and the moment is to go back home. I live 20 mins from Birmingham where there is a MAC pro store, Selfrdiges(Illamasqua!!!), Debenhams, House of Frasier etc etc.

So we shall see what happens. Fingers crossed I land something!

Going back to my NIGHTMARE OF A DAY which is Tuesday...

I've made a right mess of things! Firstly I agreed to work on Rocks TV, I've mentioned these before in my industry is a let down post.. Well we rearranged for me to do a shoot for them to go out with their Easter emails. Then I got the interview with Fake Bake and then at the weekend I recieved a pretty sweet email asking me to do the make-up on a shoot for Lime Crime. If you don't know who they are then a way to describe them is kind of like the American version of Barry M.. very bright and crazy... The clothing being used in the shoot is designed by Emma Bell which is being provided by her creative director and fashion eeditor of Notion magazine Alexis Knox. Funnily enough I've tried to get in contact with Knox before through my housemate who knows her from their home town Oxford. I have decied I really want to work on the Lime Crime shoot.. obviously!! haha. To top it off I have recieved an email from uni today saying we have to attend an important meeting on Tuesday. If it was possible to be in four places at once I would!

Narnia Continued

So, as I have recently mentioned, I was working with stylist Kate Moss on another shoot to go in her look book. The theme was Narnia/Ice Queen/Lion taking inspiration from Topshops Unique AW10 collection. Here are a few photos to show the results :D

Graduate Make-up Film

The theme for the graduate make-up film is Club Kids. Since this is going to be seen by hundreds at the graduate fashion show and then at GFW and on youtube etc I want to do something pretty amazing and different! I've decided I want to use a male model and do a drag make-up but with a bit of twist.

Yesterday I practiced a make-up on my housemate Tali and we got fully in to it by incoporating clothes and props.. a hoola hoop! haha. She goes to Circus Club and the make-up seemed to fit right in with a circus theme

Coming up....

I've got lots of exciting things coming in the next couple of weeks...

- I'll start with what I did today, I know its not 'coming up' but I haven't had chance to blog it yet because it was a really last minute thing. I did the make-up on another shoot directed and styled by Kate Moss and photographed by Lee.... (must find out his last name)and the beautiful model (who has modelled for fhm and nuts magazine) Julie. The theme was Narnia/Ice Queen/Lion. It had a really wintery feel- taking inspiration from Topshops Unique AW10 Collection that has recently been showcased at London Fashion Week.

Here is a video showing behind the scenes at the show

Here is my make-up design.....

(Sorry not scanned yet) haha.

Photos soon! :]

-Saturday 6th March I am off to London to meet the Director of The Future of Fashion- Alexander. This is an event centered on creating awareness for young emerging fashion designers.

The event will be hosted by Annaliese Dayes from Britain's Next Top Model and all the money raised from tickets sales will be donated to charity.

Good times.

Still Sleeping Beauty

Here are some more pics from the Sleeping Beauty shoot (Directed and styled by Kate Moss and photographed by Ellie Harvey) :]

LiLi Photos

Here are the photos from when I went to that random house in Tottenham and the whole thing was a bit of a nightmare. I like a couple of them, but I really wasn't and I am still not impressed with the photographer. He made me hold a burning hot light right by Kieshers face and you can really tell! And his editing is pretty dire.

This industry is a let down!

I know I get some great opportunities but it get some really knock backs as well!

I've had three recently.. The first being Rocks.tv- a shopping channel that sells jewellery. They asked me to go and do make-up and then cancelled on the day due to family problems. The second is for DISORDER Magazine; the fashion editor has postponed twice now due to 'family problems' haha. The third fail is from Boots magazine. I've been working with Kiesher AKA LiLi which is meant to be an ongoing project and she asked me to do the make-up for an interview she was doing for Boots magazine and I said yes obviously, but then the night before she called and said I couldn't do it! She had obviously showed them the work we have been doing together and they thought it was too over the top and it wouldn't suit the magazine. Thats fair enough but thats what Kiesher asked me to do.. I can do natural make-up as well! So all in all I am not feeling too positive right now.

I did however work on an awesome shoot yesterday. I did the make-up for a fantasy story book shoot being put together by Kate Moss, modelled by Emily Giles, photographed by Ellie Harvey. This particular story was Sleeping Beauty and the atyling and set was really dreamlike and beautiful. Reminded me of the Vera Wang Princess TV ad and also Nick Knight's 'Sleep' project, where he filmed 9 top models 'unconcious fashion performances'.
